Creepily Enthusiastic Maryland Teen Asks Legislators to Outlaw Gay Marriage for Her Birthday

Excerpt: Today is my 14th birthday and it would be the best birthday present ever if you would vote ‘no’ on gay marriage. I really feel bad for the kids who have two parents who are the same gender. Even though some kids feel like it’s fine, they have no idea what kind of wonderful experiences they miss out on. I don’t want any more kids to get confused about what’s right and okay. I really don’t want to grow up in a world where marriage isn’t such a special thing anymore. It’s rather scary to think that when I grow up, the legislator or the court can change the definition of any word they want. If they can change the definition of marriage, then they could change the definition of any word. People have the choice to be gay, but I don’t want to be affected by their choice. People say that they were just born that way, but I’ve met really nice adults who did change. So please vote no on gay marriage. Thank you.

"Gay people are born into and belong to every society in the world. They are all ages, all races, all faiths. They are doctors and teachers, farmers and bankers, soldiers and athletes. And whether we know it, or whether we acknowledge it, they are our family, our friends, and our neighbors. Being gay is not a western invention. It is a human reality."

Carmen Cardona,  a disabled veteran of the US Navy, is challenging the constitutionality of federal laws defining marriage as between two members of the opposite sex. She married her partner last year, and was subsequently denied a spousal increase in her veteran’s benefits by the VA regional office in Hartford, which cited the federal government’s definition of marriage.
She is being represented in the case, which is to be filed before the Court of Appeals for Veterans’ Claims in DC, by Yale Law’s Veterans Legal Services Clinic. They will be challenging the federal definition of marriage using the 5th amendment right to due process and simultaneously challenging the constitutionality of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. This is the first time someone has tried to challenge DOMA throught the Veterans’ Claims court. This case has a chance of heading to the Supreme Court: if Cardona loses this appeal, she can then appeal to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
